I went to the pub with a different man
I went to the pub with a friend
I hadn’t been there for a while
I hadn’t been there since the end

We sat by the window and the waitress came 
She brought us our basket of bread
I met her eyes without embarrassment
And she met my eyes without dread

Sometimes you catch ahold of someone’s gaze
And suddenly neither of you can blink
Sometimes you see a look on someone’s face
You know exactly what they mean, or so you think

We didn’t go there to socialize
We didn’t go there to eat
We only went there for the whiskey
We always drank it neat

And every time we went we’d argue
And every time I’d flee
And every time you’d tip her double
And come shambling after me

Sometimes you catch a note in someone's scent
And you ask them out for a drink
Sometimes you see a look on someone’s face
You know exactly what they mean, or so you think.

We used to meet in diners
We used to meet in bars
We used to meet at your place
Which you wanted to be ours

One day I went to the pub with a different man
I went to the pub not with you
What I saw in her face was no surprise
Because I already fucking knew

Sometimes you catch a glimpse of someone's eyes
Like they saw you escape from the brink
Sometimes you see a look on someone’s face
You know exactly what they mean, or so you think
